First Meeting of 2011 held February 23, 2011

Last night's meeting of the BMCL was well-attended with about 35 people attending.

Our "native son," and County Supervisor Ed Elswick was there, as was our new volunteer Fire Chief Tim Worrell. In light of the forboding problems we have been experiencing over the past year, last night's meeting was unusually exhilarating, enhanced by the reassurance of these community Heroes.

Ed brought us up to date on the status of amendments to the Zoning Ordinance related to both small/macro scale wind turbine installations and large/utility scale wind turbine installations.

Annie Krochalis, a long-time warrior for our family, gave us a report of activities and events that the Community Center Committee (CCC:) has been pursuing over the past three months. She noted that she with Ed Elswick, Kay Moore, Karen Scott, Glenn Reed, Joan Carver, and Ann Kovats had been meeting and actively working with Clay Goodman as both County Administrator and Chair of the committee to accomplish the transition of the abandoned Bent Mountain Elementary School building to a sustainable asset to the community for public activity and enjoyment.

Steve Hanes, Volunteer Coordinator and "charter member" of the Steering Committee for the newly formed Bent Mountain Chapter of FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway described events that have led to the development of a closer relationship between our beloved Bent Mountain plateau, that we love as home, and the beautiful, world-class scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.
(Note: Chief Tim Worrell has shown us a way to realize our dreams: First, give of ourselves; and then, rewards beyond all expectation WILL follow. Tim has dedicated his service to you, voluntarily with chemotherapy for Stage IV cancer.)

Joan Carver reminded us of the upcoming "Read Across America" event sponsored by the Bent Mountain Women's Club and friends of the Library. This event will begin Tuesday, March 1, 2011 and extend through the whole month of March with the objective of increasing book checkouts from the Library from last year's achievement of 1,500 to a new goal of 1,800.  March 31, 2011 at 7:00 PM an event to celebrate the event's conclusion will be held at the Bent Mountain Library Branch. Kazim Shrine Clowns will make an appearance and face-painting activities will be a part of the fun for both kids and "so-called" adults. Prizes will include a 2-night stay at Bernard's Landing; a $25 cash prize for children from pre-school thru 5th grade; and a $25 cash prize for students from 6th grade thru 12th grade. Cash Prizes provided by Chapman Woodworking.

Ann Kovats introduced us to the availability of propane service from Davenport Propane of Rocky Mount and the information that a new owner of the greenhouses on Greenhouse Road is interested in selling "greens" in the winter months to neighbors in the community.

The By-Laws of the BMCL were amended and adopted by unanimous vote and the following Slate of New Officers and Directors of the BMCL were elcted to office by unanimous consent:
